Things to Remember. Things to Forget.

Things to Remember. Things to Forget. was a solo exhibition at Bradley University, Hartmann Gallery, Peoria, IL, in 2026. Below are installation images and a statement about the work.

Images coming soon.

The text below is from a free gallery takeaway that served as the sole label for the installation. (A reduced-size file can be viewed here)

By necessity, we forget more than we remember. If we didn’t, our minds would be overrun by inconsequential details. But sometimes experiences have such personal importance that they become a part of us. Or they are so traumatic and stressful that we hold onto them even while wishing they could be completely purged. For better or worse, some memories calcify into mementos of the past. Their presence reminds us that we are human. And alive. Yet their significance will disappear along with us when we are gone.

This exhibition is a turn inwards, examining these unnoticed and overlooked cognitive processes of living. Its inspirations include the Roman god Janus, the Temple of Dendur (completed around 10 BCE), Simonides of Ceos (born 556 BCE), The Art of Memory (1966) by Frances A. Yates, the doorway effect, the cognitive benefits of sleep, the malleability of memory and how memories change every time we access them, linguistics, Runaway (1984), awards and certificates, personal libraries, anxieties, overgrown yards, and the paper that surrounds us each day.

Thank you for visiting and I hope that you leave with an increased acceptance for all that makes you who you are at this point in time. You will be different in the future.
